9 sawmills and wood-products mills closed or set a closing in 2026

At least 9 sawmills and wood-products mills in 9 states closed or set a closing date in 2026. They make lumber, plywood, veneer and hardwood flooring. Four have dates still ahead: Hulett, WY; Clancy, MT; Montrose, CO; and Ronceverte, WV. The reasons differ by region: federal timber supply in the Rockies, prices and demand in the South, and rising costs at several mills.

Why they are closing

  • Federal timber supply. In Montrose, CO, "the mill was on track to get 26 million board feet this year from federal forests, that number was expected to drop to 22 million the following year and then to 12 million to 15 million board feet three years out," the Denver Post reported. Marks Lumber in Clancy, MT said "ongoing litigation involving federal timber sales has complicated access to future log supplies."
  • Fuel, at one mill. The Denver Post also reported that at Montrose, "with the average cost of a gallon of diesel up 72% this year following the conflict with Iran, hauling logs longer distances ceased being feasible." That is the paper's account of one mill.
  • Prices and demand. Hunt Forest Products pointed to "the decline in hardwood lumber pricing and market demand and the small size of the Olla mill." Mullican Flooring cited "low demand for high-end hardwood flooring."
  • Costs. Lumbra Hardwoods in Milo, ME said "the sawmill can't sustain rising electric and machinery costs."
  • Several things at once. Bearlodge Forest Products in Hulett, WY named "high input costs, a limited labor pool, scarce housing, and sustained downward pricing trends." Its post said: "No single issue brought us here. It was the weight of many."
  • Imports. Nordic Veneer in Roseburg, OR cited "limited wood supply, shifting market conditions, industry realignment and foreign competition."
  • Storms. Hood Industries said storm damage to its Wiggins, MS plywood mill, "combined with the age of our 56-year-old facility, would require an investment that is not economically feasible."

At Mullican, "about 70 employees are expected to lose their jobs when the plant closes around Thanksgiving," WV MetroNews reported. Marks Lumber will keep selling its inventory after sawing stops.

What we counted

We read every sawmill, plywood, veneer, OSB, lumber, flooring and similar wood-products mill record in our file one by one against its source. We count a mill when its source says it closed or set a closing in 2026. One of the nine, Montrose, is set to close unless a buyer is found. Each mill is counted once.

We left out mills that closed in 2025, mills outside the U.S., layoffs, temporary shutdowns, sources that don't name the mill, lumber retailers, furniture and cabinet plants, and pulp and paper mills. A closing date is printed only where a source states one. We don't add up jobs, because not every source gives a figure.

This is a floor, not a total. Small mills often close without a news story. We don't hold a count of all U.S. mills, so we can't give a share or a rate. Lumber and building-supply distributors are on a separate page: https://storeclosurewatch.com/briefs/building-supply-distribution-closures-2026/

This page will be updated as more closings are recorded. Each update will be dated in the changelog below.
