Chip City closed its last shops overnight. We can name 14 of them
Chip City, the New York cookie chain, closed all of its remaining shops at the end of business on Thursday, October 1, 2026, and confirmed it the next day. A memo to employees put the remaining stores at 22; some outlets reported 24. In the month before, it had closed its stores in Connecticut and Virginia. We can name 14 of the shops that closed on October 1, in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
Why it closed
In the memo to employees, reported by The Hoboken Girl, QNS and Nation's Restaurant News, the company said: "Consumers are spending less and their preferences are evolving and that has negatively impacted our sales," and "we no longer have the funding required to operate this business." Its public statement cited "significant macroeconomic headwinds."
The chain had grown quickly on outside money. QNS reported a $10 million investment from Danny Meyer's Enlightened Hospitality Investments in 2022 and a further $7.5 million in 2024, and Inc. reported that it grew to more than 50 stores. Wicked Local put the count at 39 shops open in July 2026.
The closing came days after co-founder Peter Phillips sued the company, claiming it withheld promised pay and benefits, Patch reported. The company did not say whether the lawsuit was connected to the closing.
The shops that closed on October 1
| State | Shops named | Where |
|---|---|---|
| New York | 8 | Astoria (Queens), the chain's first shop, opened in 2017; Upper West Side and Upper East Side, Manhattan; East Northport, Garden City, Merrick, North Babylon and Woodbury on Long Island |
| Massachusetts | 4 | Boston (Back Bay, and near North Station), Cambridge (Harvard Square), Watertown |
| New Jersey | 2 | Hoboken, Montclair |
The chain's Texas shops closed in the same shutdown, but the coverage we found does not name them.
Closed earlier in 2026
- Connecticut: Darien, Fairfield and West Hartford, closed in the month before the shutdown, according to Inc.
- Virginia: Clarendon and Shirlington in Arlington, VA, and Tysons, VA, closed by September 30, according to Northern Virginia Magazine. The Tysons shop had been open about a year.
- Maryland: the Bethesda, MD shop closed in January 2026, according to MoCo Show.
- New Jersey: the Ridgewood, NJ shop was already listed as permanently closed before the shutdown, The Hoboken Girl reported.
What we counted
The 14 are shops named, by street or neighborhood, in coverage of the October 1 closing. Shops that closed earlier in 2026 are listed separately and are not in the 14. Texas shops are not counted because no source we found names them. Where two outlets named the same shop, we count it once.
