Store Closure Watch recorded 310 closure and distress records across 45 states in the week ending October 10, 2026, down 41 percent from the 524 published for the week before. Last week's total carried two store-closing programs, Leslie's and Starbucks, that together supplied about one record in five; this week has no program of that size. Before publication we also removed records that repeated stores reported in earlier weeks or described earlier-year events, so part of the drop from last week reflects that cleanup. Retail led the sectors, and the week's largest single events were plants and distribution sites rather than stores.

The big story: True Food Kitchen
True Food Kitchen, the health-focused restaurant chain that counts Oprah Winfrey among its investors, filed for Chapter 11 protection on Sunday, October 4 and closed 12 restaurants the same day, citing management turnover, unsuccessful expansion efforts and pandemic-era experiments. This week's records include 13 True Food Kitchen records in nine states: California, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Virginia. The Hackensack, New Jersey restaurant's state notice covers 89 workers; the Bethesda, Maryland restaurant, open nearly a decade, is among the 12 closed.
The second story: Haynes Furniture and The Dump
Haynes Furniture, the Virginia Beach-based retailer that also operates The Dump Luxe Furniture Outlets, announced this week that it is closing permanently after 128 years in business. Going-out-of-business sales began at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 8. Coverage put the plan at four Haynes stores in Virginia plus The Dump outlets, and the company's own statement named its Williamsburg, Virginia distribution center and its flagship store and headquarters on Virginia Beach Boulevard among the sites. This week's records carry 9 Haynes Furniture and The Dump records, all in Virginia, in Newport News, Richmond, Virginia Beach and Williamsburg.
Grunt Style pulls back
Grunt Style, the San Antonio-based apparel retailer, filed state notices for its San Antonio store on Broadway Street (19 workers) and its Canutillo, Texas store at the Outlet Shoppes of El Paso (nine), with layoffs effective November 30, and coverage listed further closures or notices in Chandler, Arizona; Lutz and Destin, Florida; Woodstock, Georgia; Branson, Missouri (10 workers); Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia and Las Vegas, Nevada, with the stores expected to be closed by November 30. This week's records include 7 Grunt Style records in six states.
Leslie's, week two
Leslie's store closures from its September 30 Chapter 11 filing kept surfacing in local coverage. This week's records add 7 Leslie's records in California, Illinois, Massachusetts and New York, including Attleboro and Brockton, Massachusetts, West Chicago, Illinois and three Long Island and western New York stores. Last week's roundup covers the filing and the 76-store program.
Franchisee bankruptcies
Meritage Hospitality Group, the Wendy's franchisee in Chapter 11 since September 17, closed its Hudsonville and Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan restaurants on October 9 after Wendy's failed to block the closures in court.
Sector breakdown
Retail led with 126 of the week's 310 records, with Restaurant & Food Service at 94 and Industrial/Manufacturing at 23. On the early-warning series, which counts new events by week, Retail logged 104 against a trailing eight-week average of 102, while restaurants fell to 89 against 147. No sector ran more than a quarter above its baseline.

Methodology
Store Closure Watch compiles closure, bankruptcy, layoff and restructuring events from news coverage, state WARN notices, federal court dockets, SEC filings and retailers' own store lists, checks records against their sources, and reads every record it names. Counts are records of closure and distress events, not unique stores: a chain program such as True Food Kitchen's spans many records, and a company-level announcement and the sites named under it can each be a record. The count above is the edition of record for the week of October 10; corrections to individual records are made in later editions rather than to this page. A closure date is printed only when a source states it. Relocations, conversions and sales are kept in the records but excluded from the counts.
Correction, October 13, 2026: 6 records in this week's count came from FDIC filings we had read as bank branch closings. They were branch openings. We have relabeled them, and FDIC branch closings now come from the correct filing code. The counts above are as published.
